Science for Live Earth: Resources on global warming

Please find below, potentially useful material for Live earth party discussions, to go along with the case argued by Al Gore in his movie and live earth presentations themselves.

Readers may wish to bookmark them for future use.

Resources for discussing the scientific basis and evidence
for human-induced (anthropogenic) global warming

I recommend the following exposition as a very readable and strong case for AGW:

Scientific Evidence (of global warming)
Woods Hole Research Center, Cape Cod, MA

There is also a very readable and accessible series by Dr. Chameides at Climate 411 (the comments following the episodes provide additional useful resources):

How We Know Humans Cause Global Warming
By Dr. Bill Chameides
Environmental Defense, NY

The last episode of that series will be out next week, I was told.

Daily Kos diarist "ClimateLurker" is posting the same in her diary series with excellent commentary in response to the questions asked.

~~~~~~~~~~
I have been putting together some data analysis based arguments and plots on my own, which can be found in these DKos discussions:
- Temperature and CO2 taking off
- this comment lays out the sequence of arguments I'd currently make to argue the presence of AGW.
~~~~~~~~~~

RealClimate.Org is "science central" for AGW.

There have recently put up a Start here page with a guided compilation of materials.

The search feature (near top right of the banner) there is often very useful.

~~~~~~~~~~
Hope these help.
I'll post more material if I get to complete somethings I am working on, either as an update to this diary or as a fresh diary.
If you have questions (or answers and other help), please do not hesitate to post the same in comments.
Thanks.
We need to get (none / 0)
this info in the hands of some of those Senate republicans.  Senator Inhofe comes to mind immediately (the bastard).
Re: We need to get (3.00 / 0)
Inhofe is covered in layers of denialism. Even Jesus Christ won't be able to get him to admit that global warming is a problem.
Re: Science for Live Earth: Resources on global wa (3.00 / 2)
NL these are excellent resources.  Very readable.  thank you for finding them and sharing.  There are many links to this topic and sometimes finding ones that are good to refer to people are not handy.
I highly recommend that people check them out.
thanks, p111 (3.00 / 1)
should've posted it yesterday before the morning live earth coverage. I'll be posting more diaries in the coming days as I explore and learn more about the subject.
Lots of good info here (3.00 / 1)
thanks for the hard work in putting it together!  i really hope folks will continue to be serious about these issues even after Live Earth events go dark.  Gore says this is the start of a 3 year intensive pr campaign with the Earth as the client.  Let's hope we all ANSWER THE CALL!!
Re: Lots of good info here (3.00 / 0)
I think he said "3 year campaign" and not an exclusively PR campaign. Raising public awareness would be and is a significant component of it, of course.
But, as a Gore'08 supporter, if necessary, hopefully  it will end up including a Gore presidential campaign as well :)
thanks for the compliment (3.00 / 0)
the diary wasn't too much hard work. Just wanted to post links to some good expositions. But the diary in the works is taking some time.
Re: thanks for the compliment (3.00 / 1)
I recommended it because regardless of how hard it was or wasn't it's important.
have you seen an article on pandemics (none / 0)
and their effects on the global climate?
I can't remember where I read this--maybe it was in a book review. Someone wrote a book on how pandemics including bubonic plague dramatically reduced populations in Europe and China and may have helped bring on mini-ice ages. There was something in the article about deforestation in China centuries ago, which was affecting the global climate and was halted by a major pandemic.
Sometimes people tell me that they believe the earth is warming, but they can't believe that human activity could be the cause. I want to have some facts to show them that even before the industrial age, when the earth's population was much smaller than it is now, there is evidence that human activity has affected the global climate.
Anyone ever seen something like this?
Re: have you seen an article on pandemics (none / 0)
This RealClimate.Org article sheds some light on the temperature variations during the first two millenia AD.
Basically, I personally don't think that humans started seriously impacting the climate until we hit a population of 1 billion or so, which happened sometime between 1800 and 1850, coinciding with the industrial revolution that ensued from 1850.
Here are the basic facts about CO2: for 780 thousand years prior to 1850 (for which we have CO2 readings from various methods), the CO2 level has remained below 300 ppm (parts per million) as it varied between 180 ppm and 300 ppm during that period of 7 or so glacial cyles (cycles of ice age, thawing and warm periods, each spanning around 100K years). See this picture.
Since 1850, CO2 has been steadily on the rise, and steeply so since 1950 or so, and even worse since 1970. Now, we're at 380 ppm, heading towards 500 to 700 ppm by the end of the century (unless we change course, which one hopes has begun in earnest with Live Earth yesterday).
I have been doing some work on CO2 levels and their relation to temperature, it clearly displays a positive and unmistakable correlation between Temperature and CO2. You can see preliminary versions of that here. I will be posting a diary or two in the coming days once I complete some of that work.
Re: have you seen an article on pandemics (none / 0)
NL, the environment and the political dealings with it is such an important topic, that regardless of whether or not Gore runs, we need this information.  Gore will keep the public eye on this topic.  I was just thinking that you really are doing some good research on this.  nyceve has done amazing work on universal health care and she was orginally not a UHC expert.  I don't know if anyone is really looking at environmental issues in a less partisan way on the main blogs.  I think that there may be a need.  Just something for you to think about.  I do know you support Obama, but your willingness to criticize him for CtL shows that you can be objective on this matter.  And I am a supporter of Edwards and think he is the best on most issues.  However I do think pressure as a result of the presidential processes make all the candidates take better positions.
My issue about the environment is non-negotiable.    For me it is less negotiable than the Iraq war because it is about life on the planet.  I could not support Edwards if he did not support the latest policy positions on the environment.  I support Gore 100% in this campaign of his.  I am older than you (closer to Gore's age) and I was originally affected by Rachel Carson, author of "Silent Spring."  In this article  Fooling with Nature I was surprised to find out (but shouldn't have been) that Gore was also impacted by Carson.
I think this is more important than people realize and many politicians are just waking up to the fact.  I also love Melissa Ethridge's song - I need to wake up.  Anyway good for you on this part of your blogging. ;-)
